Generalized Anxiety Disorder is characterized by excessive, long-lasting anxiety and worry about nonspecific life events, objects, and situations. If you have GAD, you may feel fear and frequent worrying about your health, finances, work, money, or school. Usually these feelings are generalized, about the situation as a whole rather than one specific event or situation (such as in phobias).

These GAD symptoms of fear and worry tend to be unrealistic or out of proportion to what would be considered normal, and the constant expectation of failure or catastrophe begins to interfere with daily functions like work, school, social activities, and relationships.

I Feel Anxious – How Do I Know If I Have GAD?

The symptoms we talk about as characterizing anxiety are symptoms all of us feel from time to time. It can be considered a “clinical illness” only when the intensity of the symptoms reach a certain level of intensity, or when they are excessively persistent. If you have symptoms like these and they are very destructive, causing you to fail at your occupation or relationships, or otherwise severely handicapping you, seek professional advice immediately. Untreated, the chemicals released into the body by the stress of anxiety can produce physical illness and nervous breakdown.

If you are like most people, you feel more anxiety than you would like to, and more than is beneficial (a small amount of anxiety from time to time keeps you alert, on the ball, and responsive to challenges). There are things you can do to combat your anxiety. Remember, anxiety is actually a part of your body’s stress reaction, and therefore the real source of your tension and fear is your subconscious mind. You can learn to use powerful Mind Tools to Relax Deeply and begin the treatment of anxiety targeted at its source. You can learn meditation and use guided imagery to maintain calm in the face of your daily challenges.

Learn to Abolish Anxiety when it is generalized in nature, and Free Yourself From Fear when the anxiety is episodic. When the anxiety is associated with physical issues and illnesses, there are tools to lower and treat your anxiety while you Heal Your Body. For OCD and other unwanted behaviors and addictions, you can Change Behavior Patterns. A good program that will help you Manage Stress is invaluable.

And be aware that in many cases anxiety disorders occur together with depression, so it is worthwhile to learn the Mind Tools that can enable you to Escape From Depression.
