The Response to Surgery depends on mental factors

  • Surgical patients who listened to audio suggestions via headphones while under anesthesia in the operating room recovered from their surgery faster than those who underwent conventional recovery. Patients in the latest study underwent hysterectomies. During the procedure, they heard cassette recordings of suggestions such as, “How fast you recover is up to you—the more you relax, the more comfortable you will be.” One-half of the patients studied were released from the hospital just one day after the removal of their stitches. Only ten percent of the patients who weren’t exposed to the recordings were released in that time. Study by the United Medical and Dental Schools of Guy’s and St. Thomas’ Hospitals, London, reported in The Lancet, 34 Beacon Street, Boston, MA 02108
