The Wisdom of the World: A Conversation with Angeles Arrien, Ph.D. [Free Podcast]

downloadAngeles Arrien Ph.D. has been one of my favorite people for many years, as one of those who has been as interested in trans-cultural approaches to psychology, spirituality, and global healing. You will love some of the profound insights she shares about cultivating hope, uplifting the human spirit, and awakening our potential for collective wisdom and transformation.

Angeles Arrien, Ph.D. is a cultural anthropologist, award-winning author, educator, and consultant to many organizations and businesses. She lectures and conducts workshops worldwide, bridging cultural anthropology, psychology, and comparative religions. Her work is currently used in medical, academic, and corporate environments. She is the President of the Foundation for Cross-Cultural Education and Research. Her books have been translated into thirteen languages and she has received three honorary doctorate degrees in recognition of her work.

To me she is “Angie,” one of my mentors – who awakened in me an awareness of the importance of story, and catalyzed my writing of Deep Healing – The Essence of Mind-Body Medicine. In this conversation, we explore the value of inspiration, challenges that stretch us beyond our comfort zone, and respect. You will learn about the value of surprise, and the creative rather than the defensive approach to life.

Dr. Arrien continually refers to the traditional teachings of indigenous cultures from around the world, and the profound oneness of the wisdom that all cultures have evolved. You will love this episode.

Physician Heal Thyself – How We Can Help Medicine Get Over Its Own Illness: A Conversation With Rachel Remen, MD [Free Podcast]

Physician Heal Thyself – How We Can Help Medicine Get Over Its Own Illness: A Conversation With Rachel Remen, MD [Free Podcast]

Rachel-Naomi-Remen-Headshot-226x300Today’s conversation features best-selling author, physician, and thought leader Rachel Remen M.D., whose work is changing doctors and medical schools throughout the world.

“I first met Rachel in the early 1970s, when she visited Esalen Institute to experience the work we were doing to create a new kind of medicine–one that was holistic and that focused on self-healing and human potential,” reminisces Dr. Miller.

In this conversation, you will hear how her “mind was blown,” and about her transformation from a typically rigid, emotionally closed, chief of a department at Stanford University Hospital to founder of “The Healer’s Art Curriculum.” This is a course that has enabled many thousands of physicians and other health professionals to transform their lives and deepen their sense of calling and service. It has been featured in US News & World Report in 2002 and 2005 and is presently taught in 60 medical schools here and 9 medical schools abroad.

You will find out why Dr. Remen says that “the footprints of the future are in the present,” and about how there is a hidden curriculum in modern medical education–one which gradually disconnects young doctors from their life purpose. You will hear how this leads to emotional repression, isolation, and burnout, on the part of the health professional, and ultimately, substandard care of patients and clients.

Listen, and discover more about the importance of being able to meet loss with presence, create real relationship between human beings (because, as Dr. Remen says, “medicine is an act of love”), and move beyond the “isolation of rank” to discover the “unity of service.” You will hear touching stories about physicians as they awakened from their slumber to discover the truth about healing and human relationship.

Escape Your Mental Traps and Heal Our World: A Conversation with Frances Moore Lappe [Free Podcast]

Escape Your Mental Traps and Heal Our World: A Conversation with Frances Moore Lappe [Free Podcast]

Escape Your Mental Traps and Heal Our WorldOur conversation today is with the very busy Frances Moore Lappé. She has authored 18 books since she first reached national prominence with her three million copy selling Diet for a Small Planet.

In it she demonstrated that, although the ability of our planet to provide food is limited, if we learn how to eat wisely we can eat well, be healthy . . . and have enough for the starving millions to eat well also.

It’s become quite fashionable these days to sit around bemoaning the terrible state of affairs on planet Earth, what with global pollution, governmental corruption, corporate overreaching, and the fact that nearly one in every 7 human beings planetwide go to bed hungry every night, Francis bucks the trend again. Feeling helpless and defeated may seem like a good excuse for not doing anything, but, as Francis shares with us, these are simply thought traps–ways of thinking that make it hard for us to see the truth–that we can, by changing how we are thinking, discover that there are solutions to all these problems.

Together, we will explore the ideas presented in her most recent book, EcoMind: Changing the Way We Think to Create the World We Want. The very simple and yet very powerful fact that escapes the attention of far too many people is that, for the most part, we do not see reality–what we see is a story about reality, a story constructed by beliefs that we have absorbed from the world around us. Or, as Frances says, “we don’t see the world as it is, we see it as we are.” And that perspective shapes not only how we perceive this moment, but also what we believe is possible for our future.

As a result, we get caught in what she calls “thought traps,” powerful (although false) assumptions that disempower us. Together we explore the power of mental frames, how the problem of hunger can be successfully addressed, why a freedom from oil dependence is a necessary step towards the creation of real democracy, at home and abroad, and how democracy itself provides the ideal tools we need to make the changes that are long overdue.

Obama Interview wins Emmett Miller Jr. prestigious Cronkite Award

emmett-obama-wide-400x295Here I am the proud papa again! Our eldest son, Emmett Jr., has won another journalism award to add to his Emmys and his Associated Press Excellence in Journalism win.

Now his interviews of Barack Obama and Herman Caine (Watch the videos here of Interview: Barack Obama & Emmett Miller and Herman Caine & Emmett Miller) have enabled the network BET to win this year’s Walter Cronkite Award for Excellence in Television Political Journalism. Two of the 5 pieces submitted for judging by a panel of nine judges chaired by Geneva Overholser, director of the USC Annenberg School of Journalism.

The Walter Cronkite Awards for Excellence in Television Political Journalism are named for distinguished journalist and longtime CBS anchor Walter Cronkite. In this year’s competition, CBS, NBC, and the other major networks lost out, along with well over 100 other entries received in 2013 – a record.

“It was an especially strong field, and judges were encouraged that it was so hard to pick winners,” said USC Annenberg professor Martin Kaplan, director of USC Annenberg’s Norman Lear Center, which has administered the biennial awards since 2000. “The entries demonstrate that against long odds, TV journalists across the country are determined to get it right in a medium that most Americans still turn to in order to learn about their electoral choices.”

Jurors noted that BET issued “a call to action to potential voters.”  While stories were substantive and insightful, “a lot of heart and passion went into pieces” as well. Moreover, they opined that all Americans deserve the level of solid coverage that [this network provides its] audiences.”
